Some work requires a skillset that demands a person spent his entire life doing it or that organization have a very particular collection of people. For example, a client wants a web application to implement a complex business-process that cannot be handled by something off-the-shelf. This process is not written down or systematized (exists in a another form such as paper forms or Excel spreadsheets) in any way. Moreover, he mixes the product he wants with the problem he might want to solve. The job is a bit vague. The client wants you to provide something, solve something, or both. He is not sure. He is only certain that ne needs something. You have that out, and deliver on that need You can only do this, if you’ve spent you’re career dealing with this type of work. An organization can only do this, if it has team of analysts and technical people to pull the job apart and execute on those findings.
Few people will into that category and few organizations will. The people who do are the ones who have spent their career doing it. The organizations who do are quite large and have a particular skillset (Microsoft and HP come to mind). Those individuals are unlikely to become commodities. The barriers to entry are high. You have to spend your career doing it. Or be a really large organization with a diverse set of skills and a desire to this kind of work (Microsoft, HP, or IBM vs. Apple or Google).
This is where deep knowledge, specialization, and niching comes into the picture. Not everyone can do has the capabilities. Even if some have that, they don’t want to do the work. Those that both can and are willing are a small set. Certain tasks like the one I described above, demand the creation of this kind of niche. ChatGPT is unlikely to replace that type of work. It’s one of the limitations of being a representation of a median person.
